Where the numbers come from. The word list is the one our solver uses: 178,691 words, of which 8,938 have five letters. Points are face values for Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordfeud, before board multipliers. The Wordle figures come from playing each word against every five-letter word as if it were the answer, bucketing the results by the green/yellow/grey pattern and measuring how much the field shrinks — the method in full. The strongest opener by that measure is TARES, which leaves about 205 candidates.
What it is not. This is not the official tournament word list of any game, and Wordle’s answers are a smaller, more everyday subset of the five-letter words here. Nothing on this page is affiliated with Hasbro, Mattel, Zynga or The New York Times.
